Friends of bluegrass will be sad to
learn of the passing of Harvey
    Ledenhauer. Although Harvey was
    known most recently for free-lance
mandolin picking with many bands, his
    accomplishments date back many years.
He claims to have played bluegrass
music as early as 1925, although he didn’t
call it that. By 1929 he had to give up
performing because he found he could not
support himself in the south playing any
type of music but the current rage, old-
time music, although no one called it that
    either. Among his personal possessions,
Harvey left a framed set of ink autographs
of the 1945 Blue Grass Boys. Harvey
had purchased this unique item from a
dealer in Newark for a price which was
said to be in six figures. We understand
that all previous autographs of this type
    were in pencil.
    Musicians close to Harvey Ledenhauer
tell us that events leading to his tragic
death began at Indian Springs, Maryland,
in the fall of 1977. By that time he was
playing mandolin more than twenty hours
each day. It was on August 26th
at a bluegrass festival near Parkersburg,
West Virginia, that Harvey first played
constantly for a two day period. At
midnight he turned into a rather large
    Gibson A-model mandolin with uncharac-
    teristic appendages. Although the ap-
    pendages are capable of movement,
    the coroner pronounced Harvey Leden-
haurer deceased as of August 27, 1978,
    because an electroencephalogram of the
large A-model failed to produce brain
waves. Since the cemetery informed us
that it cannot inter a musical instru-
ment with appendages, the family has
decided to accept bids on Harvey’s
    remains.
