When I first moved to western North
Carolina, I was surprised to find that
there are few places to go to hear
bluegrass or old-time music. For this
reason alone, Bill Stanley’s Bar-B-Que and
Bluegrass in Asheville, North Carolina, is
a godsend, for there one can hear good
    bluegrass or old-time music virtually
every night. To the bluegrass fan in
western North Carolina, it represents a
rare haven. Put the music in a pleasant
atmosphere, add good food and beer (very
important to those of us who live in the
    surrounding “dry” counties), and you’ve
got a great way to spend an evening.
Local favorites Marc Pruett and his New
Day Country Band provide the music at
Bill Stanley’s on most nights and have
proven to be such a hit that reservations
are a must on Friday and Saturday nights.
On an average Friday and Saturday night
they take over 300 reservations, and if
space allowed, could accept even more.
In February, Bill added a new and
welcome dimension to the music scene in
Asheville and the surrounding area. On
Monday nights, the audience will be
treated to some of the best acts in
bluegrass. Bill inaugurated this series on
February 25 with an act that is hard to
    beat—Ricky Skaggs performing with
Buck White and the Down Home Folks.
This exciting group of musicians gave a
great performance. I drove over a
hundred miles round trip through blowing
snow to see them and it was well worth it.
The place was packed—the band played to
a standing-room only crowd made up of
people of all ages and backgrounds. Some
had driven from as far away as Knoxville,
    Tennessee.
    As most bluegrass followers know,
Ricky Skaggs is a virtuoso on nearly any
string instrument and has a truly
incredible voice. All of his talents are
    showcased on his “Sweet Temptation”...
