    Description

    Up for auction is this Georgian England Toddy (punch made with alcohol) ladle. It measures 14.25 inches long from tip of handle to bottom side of bowl. The bowl measures just over 3.5 inches (including lip) by 2 1/8 inches. It is approximately 1 inch deep. I see one very tiny pinpoint ding in the inside of the bowl. No other damage to the silver.
    For decoration, a shilling (made of 92.5% silver) was added to the bottom middle
    of the bowl. It depicts George III (right facing) and the words,
    'GEORGIVS

    III

    DEI

    GRATIA'. The back of the coin contains
    cruciform shields with a large Garter star in the center; crowns in the angles;
    and the words and numbers,
    M•B•F•ET•H•REX•F•D•B•ET•L•D•S•R•I•A•T•ET•E•1787• in a continuous circle around the outside of the coin. Note that the year on the coin is 1787. Just for information, the top shield shows three lions to the left, representing England, and one lion to the right representing Scotland. The right shield shows three Fleur-de-lis, representing France; the lower shield shows a harp, representing Ireland; and the left shield shows the Hanoverian arms with a semee of hearts.
    Half of the handle is made of baleen, which wasn’t actually whale bone but a part of the whale’s internal system that was bendable and easily shaped when raw, but which hardened as it dried. I am not an expert on identifying baleen but by looking at other pictures identified as such, I believe this to be baleen, not wood. There is some damage to the tip of the handle. I can’t tell if it originally had a silver tip that is now missing or if it got damaged some other way.
    Please enlarge pictures.
    The front of the bowl has a stylized “K” engraved on it.
    On the outside of the rounded end of the bowl there is a partial crowned leopard’s head, which was the town mark for London; the letter ‘H’, indicating the ladle was made in 1803; and the King’s head, indicating additional tax paid to the crown. There is also the very top of a makers mark. However, not enough of it transferred onto the metal to be readable. The back of the silver part of the handle is marked with a Lion Passant, indicating 92.5% silver (sterling) fineness.
