Complete Ticket (with Gagne's image) from Eric's Cy Young season.
    I
    n 2003, Gagne
    had
arguably the greatest season for a closer in big league history.
Gagne was a perfect 55 of 55 in save opportunities. He pitched in 77 games and finished 67 of them. Among relief pitchers, his 2003 ranks in the top 10 all time among relievers in the following categories: fielding-independent pitching (0.81, first), save percentage (100 percent, first), saves (55, tied for third), opponents’ OPS (.374, fourth), hits per nine innings (4.04, sixth), opponents’ batting average (.133, sixth), WHIP (0.69, seventh), strikeouts per nine innings (14.98, seventh), opponents’ slugging (.176, ninth) and opponents’ OBP (.199, 10th). His 137 strikeouts rank 11th.
Gagne allowed only 49 total bases the entire season, he walked 20 batters and surrendered 37 hits in 82 1/3 innings. He was the runaway Cy Young Award winner (taking 28 of 32 first-place votes), becoming the second ever-Canadian pitcher to win the prize (Ferguson Jenkins, 1971) and ninth reliever to win it. He’s also the last.
The 55 saves were part of Gagne’s Major League record 84-consecutive saves, which began August 28, 2002 at Dodger Stadium against the Arizona Diamondbacks and ended July 5, 2004 at Dodger Stadium against those same Diamondbacks.
This item was signed by Mr. Gagne and witnessed by Hall of Fame Sports at one of our public/private signings with Eric.
