Description
Scarce 1st edition pinpoints untapped silver& gold near Daggett, Newberry Springs, CA
Report also describes old mines and prospects near Barstow
in Mojave Desert; report is in beautiful condition
T
his hard-to-find first-edition report shows probable locations of UNTAPPED gold and silver in California's Mojave Desert, near Newberry Springs and Daggett.
And it also shows you mines and areas where the gold and silver have been found.
Small detail of color map from report shows areas in red that have best probability of silver (Ag) and gold (Au) deposits. Known mines and prospects are marked with "x" and number. Numbers refer to descriptions of mines in report.
Landmarks are intentionally blurred in scans to protect mine locations. Landmarks are not blurred on real map.
These newer USGS reports — all with the same cover but completely different contents — represent some of the BEST and MOST ACCURATE info on some of the LEAST-known gold deposits in California. Prospectors and collectors who pass these reports over — simply because they are newer — are making a HUGE mistake. Many of these USGS first editions are rarer than reports 100 years old. Very few of these were printed.
Yes, the area is somewhat remote, but where did you expect to discover gold? In the parking lot of the Barstow McDonalds?
But fear not, intrepid explorers. The area may be a little off the beaten path, but many of the roads in this area are easily traveled by vehicles with highish clearance like SUVs or pickups. Chances are that you won't need 4WD. Check out the map at the bottom of the ad; it gives you a good idea where the area is.
Untapped gold deposits
There is a "moderate" probability that "undiscovered gold and silver" awaits discovery in this 44,864-acre section of high desert, 10 miles from Barstow. The authors — a group of
government geologists — exactly pinpoint the areas most likely to
contain these deposits. These areas are plainly described in the text and even more plainly marked on the maps.
Rarely seen on ebay
I have been buying and selling mining items on ebay for 12 years and have seen only a couple other copies of this report. This 28-page book is considered primary source material. And the book itself is in beautiful, near-fine condition, one of the best copies that I have seen. So buy it now or forever hold your peace. Once it's gone, it's gone.
Maps show old mines, prospects
Not only do the maps predict where new deposits are, they also locate every known prospect and mine in the study area, the Rodman Mountains and the Newberry Mountains, just south of Interstate 40, east of Daggett. The map of mine locations is just the thing for history buffs, bottle collectors, photographers, geologists, hikers, offroaders, rockhounds, prospectors, metal detector enthusiasts — just about anyone interested in exploring or learning about old mine sites in this historic area, amid some of the high desert's most spectacular scenery. (See the "where is it" section and the map at the end of this ad for a more exact location of the study area.)

Gold found in numerous areas
The report says that "there is no record of mineral production" from either mountain range, but "no record" of production does not mean that there really was no production. Early miners often kept production figures secret — less chance of being taxed by the government and less chance of claim jumpers. In fact, samples taken by the authors from "numerous prospects in or near these areas have revealed occurrences of gold, silver, copper, iron, barium and manganese."
And the authors of this report didn't just probe the Rodmans and Newberrys using age-old prospecting techniques of pick, shovel and panning — they also used some of the most cutting-edge high-tech methods for locating mineral deposits: inspection of Landsat multispectral-scanner images; interpretation of gravity and aeromagnetic maps; and in-depth testing of samples collected in the field. Not to worry, though. The report isn't indecipherable geo-babble. The easy-to-use maps show areas where gold and silver are likely to occur. However, because this is a book about mining
and
geology, it does contain technical details about geology.
Mines and prospects covered include the:
Azucar mine
, 135-foot inclined shaft with drifts; samples collected at this site contained gold and silver; vein strikes north, curving to the northeast.
Valley prospect
, both samples contained gold. Quartz vein — up to 0.9-feet thick — strikes north and dips 70 degrees west. It can be traced by float between two pits.
Flying M Association claim group
(formerly known as Camp Rock mine), gold occurs in alluvial fan deposits ranging from two to 33 feet thick. Samples taken for this report contained gold; one sample was panned and contained placer gold.
Moonlight prospect
, 22-foot vertical shaft; one vein sample contained 0.04oz/ton gold and 0.74 percent copper.
To see just how much real estate this report covers, see the last scan in this ad. Interestingly, roads in this area are plainly marked on the Auto Club of Southern California San Bernardino County road map, so that road map can be used to correlate exact mileages to mines and other geologic features on the maps from this book.
Where is it?
The Newberry Mountains and Rodman Mountains Wilderness Study Areas are 10 to 30 miles southeast of Barstow, California. The areas are one to five miles south of Interstate 40 and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad.
With the exception of Newberry Springs, the nearest supply point, the areas are almost entirely unpopulated Mojave Desert wilderness.
Of course, even a remote area like this has a few well-known hot spots. Newberry Springs has the world-famous Bagdad Cafe, made famous by the cult movie of the same name. Stop in for the Jack Palance burger while you're out exploring.
San Bernardino County is in southeastern California, bounded on the east by Arizona and Nevada; on the south by Riverside County; on the west by Los Angeles and Kern counties; and on the north by Inyo County.
The book:
Mineral Resources of the Newberry Mountains and Rodman Mountains Wilderness Study Areas, San Bernardino County, California
, Bulletin 1712-A, first edition, 1987, by Brett F. Cox, Andrew Griscom, James E. Kilburn, Gary L. Raines and Daniel H. Knepper Jr. (USGS) and Charles Sabine and Lucia Kuizon (U.S. Bureau of Mines); published by Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey, United States Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C., 28 pages, 8.5 by 11 inches. Stapled binding, stiff paper covers, report is in near-new excellent condition.
As always, I am
extremely
conservative about rating book condition and very detailed in listing any potential flaw, no matter how slight. You get what you pay for. If you want a trashed book — filled with scribbled notes, dog-eared pages and underlined passages that the seller just "somehow forgot" to tell you about in his ad — then look elsewhere on ebay.
Detail of map from book shows location of study areas in Newberry Mountains and Rodman Mountains in relation to Barstow, Lenwood, Daggett, Ord Mountains, Cady Mountains, Mojave River, Calico Mountains, Newberry Springs, Barstow Road, Lavic Dry Lake, Sidewinder Mountain, Stoddard Ridge, Kane Wash, Yermo and Interstate 15, the major highway from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, NV.
