    Description

    Leadville Mining District Claims Map
The Saunders Leadville claim map is one of the most iconic western mining claim maps available.  Not only is it historically significant, but it is also quite aesthetic with the arrangement of claims and color-coded claim blocks.  These maps have been quite scarce in the past, but a large lot was discovered some years ago, and I was able to high grade the best quality maps from this lot.  They were printed on two different types of paper, one is a normal heavy white paper, and the other is a more translucent almost “onion skin” type.  It has been suggested that these maps may have been reprinted after 1901, but I have no personal knowledge of this either way, so we are selling these maps as-is with no guarantee of age.
The one offered here is the white paper variety.
The Leadville Mining District claims map was compiled by Chas. F. Saunders from "Official Records and Other Reliable Sources", January 1901.  The scale is 1200 feet to the inch.  It was printed by the Denver Litho. Company
The map measures 32" x 44" from edge to edge.  The district is outlined by a black border which measures 31-1/4” x 38-1/2”.
It is filled with an astonishing array of mining claims numbering in the hundreds.  The lower left-hand corner is an index of 64 of the larger companies/claim groups which are color-coded (chromolithography) on the map.
The map is invaluable as a historical reference, and for putting your mining collectibles and mineral specimens from this classic location in context.  Lode mines rich in silver, gold, lead and zinc proliferated in Leadville starting in the late 1870’s. Famous mines like the Iron Silver, Robert E. Lee, and Printer Boy are shown.  Horace Tabor, John Campion, David H Moffat, and the Guggenheim family all had properties here including the Matchless, Little Pittsburg, Ibex (Little Jonny), A Y and Minnie, and Chrysolite.  The Coronado mine was at the center of the miner’s strike in 1896.  Mineral specimens grace collections worldwide from the Ibex, Irene, Black Cloud, Wolftone, Adelaide, Julia Fisk and others. Mining companies held claims including the Antioch, Comstock, Houghton, Mammoth and the Tom, Dick & Harry Lodes, and others too numerous to mention.
Also shown on the map ais a plat of the town of Leadville, the Arkansas River, California Gulch, Iowa Gulch, the Yak Tunnel, county section lines, the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad and the Colorado & Southern Railroad.
This map is in excellent condition with only the slightest fraying, nicks and minor tearing on the outer edges outside of the black border.  There is also some minor water staining outside of the black border as well.  It is also slightly yellowed.
So don’t miss your chance to own this beautiful historic map.
