Awaiting your purchase is a rare and wonderful sterling silver pen or pencil case with a silver chain and chatelaine ring to one end made by the firm of
Sampson Mordan & Company
, founded by the English silversmith Sampson Mordan (1790–1843), inventor of the mechanical pencil and later passed down to his son
Sampson Mordan II,
who registered his first hallmark in
1880
, and can be found working through
1939.
This piece was likely made by the latter. The two-piece pull-apart case, which is decorated with a faceted geometric pattern, is held together by a silver chain attached to a small ring for attaching to a chatelaine. This attractive and useful item remains in
excellent antique condition
with age-appropriate wear and bears
no monogram
to the vacant panel on one side.
