Description
If your steering universal is worn out instead of rebuilding it or replacing it with an OEM universal consider replacing it withthis high quality steering universal joint. Made with caged needle rollers with a slight preload to create a joint without backlash and with noticeably lower reversing inertia than conventional automotive designs. That means enhanced sensitivity at the steering wheel, and makes even the smallest steering input more effective whether on a super speedway at high speeds or sideways on a track. Used in rare auto restorations, vintage race cars and retrofits they out perform the OEM joints used in these cars. The bearing trunnion used in these u-joints is a single piece of hardened chrome vanadium tool steel. The grease seals are high-durometer fluorocarbon o-rings in compression against the end surfaces of the needle bearing cups. These seals will resist sustained, oven level, heat and will retain the bearing grease under severe conditions. Other design details include stainless steel truss-head screws overlapping the bearing cups, and a pair of fine-thread knurled set screws located at 90o , for highly positive and reliable retention on a splined shaft and steering rack.
The photos show a typical Triumph universal that has worn out rubber bushings and even when new allowed a certain amount of backlash. This new universal has zero backlash.
They will replace the universal joints in the following Triumph cars.

The diagram shows a typical steering shaft arraignment. To make the change first set the wheels straight ahead. To remove the old universal loosen two bolts #HB710, do not remove. Remove two bolts #HB810 from the old universal. Slide steering shaft upward and extract the old universal joint. Replace with the new universal following the reverse procedure being sure that the steering wheel is still in the straight position. Align the set screws in the new universal with the undercuts in the splined shafts and tighten the set screws. Be sure that the steering wheel is still straight. Realign if necessary. Last slide the clamp upward against the outer tube and tighten.
