Description
This original collar insignia for an Officer in the Army's Chemical Corps was used from 1951-1963.The small size, just 13/16 inches long, was actually the result of a mistake in Army regulations, which changed the official 1 3/16 inches that it was supposed to be, to 13/16 inches in 1951. The correction back to 1 3/16 inches was not made until September 1963.
The insignia depicts a benzene ring superimposed in the center of crossed retorts. The U.S. Chemical Warfare Service was formed as a separate Army branch in response to the use of chemical warfare in World War I. The name was changed in 1946 to the Chemical Corps.
This pair of insignia is in very good condition as shown in the photos. The backs on the pins were very tight, so I did not remove them for photos. The insignia is still on it's original card, which has been cut.
